“As individuals and as a nation, we now suffer from social narcissism. The beloved Echo of our ancestors, the virgin America, has been abandoned. We have fallen in love with our own image, with images of our making, which turn out to be images of ourselves.”—Daniel J. Boorstin, historian & writer
“We Instagram our burgers, our trips to the mall, our beers, our sunsets. We check in to every trivial appointment, errand, and coffee on Foursquare. And now, Facebook has turned into the largest, clearest mirror ever produced by the internet, expressly designed to chronicle our lives—and to dig deep down into the primordial muck of our social ancient history.”—The New Internet Will Make You Sad Forever (via Gizmodo) Read this article about new internet and faux nostalgia by Sam Biddle.
“Life is pretty simple. You have 2 choices when it comes to everything. And especially when it comes to your career and yourself. Its either you’re going to choose to create or you’re going to choose to go towards your history.”—Melody Ehsani
My Influenster Holiday voxbox arrived today…so as we all agreed to do, here’s my review upon opening this product-filled box. Basically, Influenster is a cool merging of two marketing trends of this era: who can “influence” and what is “trendsetting”.
Community of trendsetters invited to share their lifestyles and show their influence to qualify for personalized product shipments, special rewards and exclusive deals from the brands they love. Members love testing the latest products, giving insightful feedback, and spreading the word on their favorite finds!
You basically can “play the game” of taking surveys and unlocking badges based on your specialties, interests and reach and will receive beauty products to review. Did I mention that its free? They select based on blogging/social lives on & offline and the hopes that your recommendations spread like wildfire…thus is the name Influenster.
So here goes it…
This Holiday voxbox included imPRESS press-on manicure by Broadway Nails, Softsoap Coconut Scrub bar soap, Montagne Jeunesse Face Mask in Cucumber, New York Color Liquid lip shine in Nude, Mentos Pure Fresh Gum & Larabar in Chocolate-Chip cookie dough.
The Mentos gum is almost finished as I type! I might use the Softsoap Coconut scrub…the aroma from it is kind of strong though. I’m kind of down for anything that exfoliating in this harsh winter weather. I never tried any of the Montagne Jeunesse masques before so this will be a first and a break from my Origins black clay and bentonite clay masks. Kind of nervous to do so because my skin is incredibly sensitive! iWill be trying it out regardless.
Usually I feel like people are either a lipgloss or a lipstick person. I’m a bit of both but I’m extremely particular. For example, if I’m wearing bright lipstick it has to be matte, on the other hand if I’m wearing a gloss it has to be nude. I feel like my sometimes-duck-shaped-lips look strange (or too distracting) with bright glossy fuschia lips. So this nude gloss is perfect for an everyday glosser. The quality doesn’t feel cheap either. Not bad.
Honestly, the one thing that really stood out in this package was the imPRESS press-on mani set. But perhaps I’m being biased since I need a mani and I’m already obsessed with anything nail polish-related. It gives you about 2 solid manis in one set. and I love the fact that its packaged like a little OPI bottle. Not bad. I’m glad I got this animal print and not the bright pink colour that I’ve been seeing online in other voxboxes. I’m probably going to apply these over the weekend and see how long they last. Looking forward to more “voxboxes” from Influenster.
My birthday is tomorrow and I usually get really extremely anxious and nervous beforehand. So to work off my nerves today I did an OD “Insanity” workout in the morning, my nails and am about to work on my bodacious mane. I figured its no harm in making a wish-list of things I’ve been craving to covet for Christmas.
iLove how the Clarisonic remains on all of my wishlists. Though the Olay face brush has been great to use but it isn’t a Clarisonic! Its like the Clarisonic’s cheaper, loosely-wound cousin.
Jo Malone goods…why not. Their orange blossom scent is amazing. And orange/citrus anything is usually the best aroma to wake that ass up out of bed on dark winter mornings. And I’ve heard great things about their Vitamin E treatment scrub. Vitamin E penetrating open pores, how could that not be great?
This Zara coat because I can’t [or shouldn’t] rock varsity jackets in the dead of winter like I use to.
I just love all of DANNIJO’s jewelry. They have some of the most creative and eclectic jewelry I’ve ever seen. I mean, who would not love this Lucas ring. I would rock this simple Mak bracelet as everyday armery. Did I just make up a word?
Books books books. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson! The godfather of technological revolution and innovation. This book is at the top of my list. I wonder if it gives an inside profile about the human man behind the iMachines. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? And Other Concerns is a book I’ve wanted to read since first hearing about its release. I see myself being entertained by reading it in Mindy Kaling’s awesome Valley-girl voice. I feel like I might be the only person who hasn’t read or bought The Tanning of America yet. Oh hip-hop, modern culture and its ethinic-infusion into media and economy.
Dry brushing has been around for ages but I’ve kind of just been introduced to it recently. Dry brushing does get rid of dead skin cells, increase circulation (as a brisk walk would) and help the lymphatic system work better and decrease bloating (as a massage would). iSaw some vids on Youtube & this post about the benefits of dry brushing and thought I’d share info.
This article will cover the basics you need to start dry brushing. We’ll cover selecting a brush, exactly how to dry brush, and end with a few tips.
Selecting A Skin Brush
Start off with a natural bristle brush or loofah. Look for boar bristles or fibers from plants, synthetic bristles can be too harsh and cause irritation. One that either fits in the palm of your hand or has a shorter handle which will give you more control. It is best to go into a store and feel the bristles so that you can find bristles that best suits your taste.
The Drybrushing Process
Start with your feet, moving in soft circular movements (always moving towards the heart) first on the bottom of the feet, and then on the top.
Work up each leg, one at a time, first the back of the leg (using the same soft circular, always towards the heart, movements) up through the buttock and then the front of the leg. Avoid any delicate skin, like the skin on the insides of the thighs.
After you are finished with the lower half, start at the fingertips of one arm; move up the arm (palms of hands, back of hands, forearm, biscep) and towards the heart. Repeat on other arm.
Move to the back (this is where a short handled brush may come in handy) working your movements towards your stomach, starting and finishing with one side of the back and then the other.
When you get to your stomach, start at your lower abdomen and work your way up (make sure to steer clear of delicate areas like the nipples) and end at your chest in an upward stroke.
Rinse off and shower as normal.
Skin brushing Tips
Avoid the face! While dry brushing is excellent for exfoliating skin, this body brush will be too rough for the delicate skin on your face.
It’s sometimes best to dry brush in the shower (with the water off) since there may be a lot of dead skin brushed off.
Try using a natural and healthier body soap (like those containing natural peppermint or tea tree oil) since the pores in your skin are open and clear.
How Often To Dry Brush
For best results dry brush at least two times a week.
Though dry brushing is great, the liver is the body’s largest eliminator of waste and toxins. I’m thinking of starting a homemade cleanse in January. Homemade because the Blueprint juices gave me thee worst headaches both times and its way too heavy for my pockets right now.
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, planet of inspiration, wisdom, good fortune, and abundance. You are inclined to be spiritually or philosophically oriented, talkative, intellectually curious and, at times, perhaps a bit too impressed with status and wealth. Although usually surrounded by a sense of limitless abundance, your natural exuberance and generosity can also generate the urge to throw your money around. Like those with your opposite sign Gemini rising, you can demonstrate a wide range of orientations and abilities: from being a great teacher, writer, scholar or researcher, all the way down to the flim-flam of con artistry.
