Will Yahoo!'s Acquisition of Tumblr Lead To Its Ruin?

That’s the question on everyone’s mind after hearing recent news of Yahoo!’s recent 1.1 billion acquisition of this blogging juggernaut belovedly-known as Tumblr.

Since creating Tumblr in 2007, Tumblr has grown into an undeniable social blogging force. The platform knocked passed Wordpress’ sometime over-complicated user interface and plummeted past Blogger’s bland and archaic blogging system. The great thing about Tumblr was that it was birthed a new more ferocious kind of blogging. A place where it was okay, organic and appropriate to post just photos all day and carry on reblogged conversations back to back. Tumblr was a gif paradise. Tumblr was fun blogging. Tumblr was young.

Yahoo! traditionally is none of these things.
Yahoo! is not cool.
Yahoo! is not young.

Yahoo!’s just old. It is what it is. Yahoo! buying up Tumblr is likely not going to improve ts image. You know what Yahoo! is known as to me? Open your gmail and click on your Spam folder. You see that scam email claiming that you inherited $4 Billion from your Nigerian princely cousin? What email address did that come from, either a Yahoo! or Hotmail addy right? I thought so. It’s the land of “sus” activity. I don’t even know how people still hold on to their yahoo email accounts when Gmail is “ready, willing and able”. But thats another discussion entirely.

Tumblr currently hosts over 100 million blogs and strangely enough I doubt Yahoo!’s ownership will affect that. Of course, everyone all over my dashboard expressed their disgust and anger over Karp handing Tumblr over. Similar to Facebook’s recent acquisition of Instagram, I notice that whenever changes in ownership arise a lot of people threaten abandonment. It never really happens though.

I think that as long as there are no ads plastered along the dashboard then we will have no problems…maybe.

Gel Manis, Bellinis At Melody Ehsani’s #NuvoNailBar

What was it? About two weeks ago, the good folks over at Team Epiphany teamed up with street wear and jewelry designer Melody Ehsani and Nuvo cocktails to bring her Candy Paint LA Nail Bar to NYC. The private 2-day event was a highlight and treat for nail art aficionados like myself. Ladies from all facets of the music, street wear and style industry gathered to get complimentary gel manicures, sip delicious Sparkling Nuvo-infused bellinis and cocktails, party and network.

How was it? I got the chance to finally meet Melody Ehsani after admiring her jewelry for years and stalking her style and tumblr. She’s super humble and sweet. I got more info from her about her latest collection that was on display, her line of gorgeous nail decals and gel manis. Jasmine Solano DJ’d the event, mini-cupcakes were plenty, the drinks were flowing and creative gel manis were in full effect. It was my first time getting a gel manicure EVER so I took full advantage. Check them out below. I was in loveeee with my mani. I can’t count on my hands how many people stopped me and complimented them or asked where and how I got them done…for FREE mind you. I’m glad I beared the crazy rain that day and attended.

I’m always talking about water, water, water!! Increase your water intake. Water this, water that. And guess what?

Water is still in this topic as well! This time we’re talking about the benefits of adding lemon to your water. It’s easy, simple, cheap, and still tastes pretty good.

Here are the benefits i’ve found from adding lemon to your water:

Healthy Glowing Skin: Lemon is high in Vitamin C which is used in most face washes/serums for glowing skin. The vitamin C helps reduce wrinkles, helps fade blemishes, improves elasticity, and the lemon water itself flushes the toxins out of your body, improving the skin from inside out.

Balances the pH (ladies!): Lemon is high in alkaline, putting a couple spoonfuls in your water will aide in balancing your pH levels. Although it’s highly acidic, it still balances out the acidity of your body making it neutralized.

Helps with Weight-loss/ Speeds up Metabolism: Lemons are high in fiber (pectin fiber) which helps curb cravings and helps regulate your digestive system. Trying to ignore that craving for a bag of chips? Grab some crunchy cucumber slices (maybe sprinkled with a little cayenne pepper) and drink a little lemon water to fight that craving!

Recommendation: Have a regular 8 oz glass of warm water, and add 2 spoonfuls of freshly squeezed lemon juice and drink first thing in the morning, and before you go to bed. It’s also optional to drink throughout the day if desired.

While debating if I really enjoyed The Great Gatsby or not, I decided to make a pros and cons list to organize my thoughts. It’s pretty much what the gist of my review would be anyways. Here you go.

Pro: Leonardo Dicaprio is a perfect Gatsby; hopeful, indulgent, restrained.

Con: TOBEY FUCKING MAGUIRE.

Pro: Carey Mulligan added a lovely, desperate layer to Daisy that rightfully explained why she is the subject of so much affection.

Con: The sweeping shots actually looked like Sims 3.

Pro: The music mostly worked, and Rhapsody in Blue when we first meet Gatsby was a wonderful choice.

Con: Not a single element of the movie was subtle, and many themes therefore lost their impact.

Pro: Elizabeth Debicki.

Con: Baz giving Elizabeth Debicki nothing to do.

Pro: Leonardo and Carey’s chemistry.

Con: TOBEY FUCKING MAGUIRE AND EVERY CHOICE THAT WENT INTO HIS CHARACTER.

Pro: One hour into the movie to *spoiler* Gatsby’s death.

Con: The ending.

Pro: Cinematography.

Con: The shit voiceover’s by Tobey Maguire.

Pro: Consistent pacing.

Con: Baz’s need to stay true to the novel, even when it’s not best for the movie.

Pro: Joel Edgerton was perfect.

Con: Tobey Maguire.

I agree with everything here. I would’ve added Carrie Mulligan as a con though. Leo & Joel Edgerton were perfect in every single way.

Sunday Break¹: The Non-Spoiler Spoiler

Mad Men returns for its sixth season tonight, and yes, I assume many people are excited, even though all the attention this week has been about the even stricter policies on spoilers that creator Matt Weiner has enforced on the media.

Earlier this week, Andy Greenwald of Grantland deconstructed the greatness of Mad Men and discussed why spoilers are actually important to the show’s fabric; meanwhile, one of my favorite television critics Maureen Ryan made clear her frustrations with Weiner’s restrictions. If you care, the actual letter that Weiner sent out to critics is at the end of Ryan’s column.

The specifics from the letter: do not reveal what year it is, do not discuss new characters and new relationships, and refrain from referencing two specific plot points from the two-hour premiere.

By adhering to the guidelines, critics have written previews of the season this week that basically amount to nothing; which is not to say that these writers are junk, but more, it’s hard for anyone to cook something up if all the ingredients aren’t on the table.

But in his desire to control the flow of information, Weiner has actually created the same effect that he was hoping to avoid in the first place.

Even without the concrete information of which characters are involved in new relationships, there’s the anticipation of one forming. So, when you see two characters engaging with each other in a scene early in the episode tonight, you can’t help but think and assume something larger.

In the same way, anyone who is discussed off-air will possibly be the new character(s) that will show up later in the episode. Or simply, we wonder if a client, or someone who delivers a one-liner in a particular scene, is actually being worked into a lager story. We think, we assume.

And as for the two plot points, since this is an extended two-hour episode, it’s natural to assume that at the top of each hour, something revealing and worthy of discussing will happen. Think, assume, anticipate.

And so: the non-spoiler spoilers are in fact, spoiling the experience just the same. Weiner has created a wonderful show, one of the best on television. But when it comes to rules, maybe it’s time to take a step back and just let things be.
